Notes on Gabriel J Fondario from a letter by his son, Gabriel, 9 Sep 1991:
Gabriel J was the youngest of 3 or 4. All of his siblings were sisters.
His parents died when he was very young and he went to live with an aunt where he helped her sell
fruits and vegtables in the town square. He never learned to read or write either Italian or English.
Gabriel and his first wife Mary (Marie) Antonette Nolfi were married in 1896 and moved to South
America where he worked in the fields and coal mines. They had 2 or 3 boys. His wife and boys
supposedly all died in South America and he came back to Italy where he married his wife's niece,
Francesca Anna DeVito over the objections of her mother who didn't like the idea of her marrying her
dead aunt's husband or the age difference. Gabriel was 33 and Francesca was 18. Francesca was well
educated and could read and write in Italian and eventually English as well. They married in February
1908 and moved to America in Dec 1908. They initialy lived with Francesca's father, Ralph DeVito, who
had come to America some time before and lived in Pennsylvania. Her mother Lucia evidently stayed in
Italy and died there about 1920. It is not known whether Ralph and Lucia were separated, divorced or he
simply moved to America for a better job. Ralph was later killed in a railroad accident. Gabriel and
Francesca eventually move to Utica, New York and Francesca sent for her brother, Peter DeVito, and
her sister, Geneive DeSpirto, who both lived with them for a while.
