The family came from Scotland and settled in Canada, as so many Scots did in the early 1800's. They eventually migrated down into New York and Ohio and eventually made their way to California. Following is the generational report for the Hood line with my research notes and even some interesting photos.
Modified Register for John Hood
First Generation
1. John Hood was born in 1769 in Scotland. He died in 1840 in Scotland.
John was employed as Gardener for Lord of Dunfres in Scotland.
I have not yet been able to trace the Hood line any further back than this John Hood from Alloway,
Scotland.
A birth record was found for a John Hood for 28 Oct 1769 in Rosemarkie, Cross and Cromarty, Scotland
listing John Hood and Helen Dawson as the parents.
Indicators that this may be our John Hood are:
1. John is a frequent family name.
2. One of John and Joan's children was named Helen.
3. John and Joan's first child, William Alexander, was born in Edinbugh which is near Rosemarkie.
4. A death record for John Hood was found in Rosemarkie that gives his age at death as 71 matching
the age we have for John. If he was originally from Rosemarkie he might very well have been taken
there for burial rather than in Alloway.
5. There is a signature of Alexander Hood at the bottom of the death record, possibly as a witness. John
had a grandson named Alexander and Alexander is also a frequent family name.
Although there are strong indicators that this John Hood and Helen Dawson may be the parents of the
John Hood who married Joan Gogar, John's grandson Alexander was born in Canada and there is no
indication that he ever returned to Scotland. Further research on FamilySearch.org (8/24/2010) shows
that this John Hood is not ours. He marries Ann Dallas and lives elsewhere in Scotland.
John married Joan Gogar . Joan was born in 1770 in Alloway, Scotland. She died on 13 Nov 1866 in Dunwich Township, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Largie Cemetery, Ontario, Canada.

All of Joan and John's children were born in Scotalnd and after John died she moved to Canada with her
family.
Although the earlier geneology says that Joan was buried in Largie Cemetery in Ontario, Canada, there
is no marker for her there. There is a marker for her son, Francis, his wife, Catherine, and their son,
John.

Charlotte married Alexander Scott son of James Scott and Christian Cunningham on 5 Oct 1822 in Alloa, Scotland. Alexander was born on 26 Jan 1786 in Alloa, Scotland. He died on 22 Oct 1868 in Mount Joy Farm, Glengarry, Ontario.
Alexander joined religion Scotch Presbyterians. He was employed as Master Weaver.
Alexander married Charlotte Mary Hood six months after his first wife, Catherine White died.
He and Catherine had three childern together and he and Charlotte had nine children.
While in Scotland, he was a master weaver and owned and operated a linen mill. Some records claim
there were fourteen to twenty looms in operation at one time.
When Alexander and Charlotte's third child, Alexander, was less that a year old the family left Scotland
for America. They originally settled in St. John, LaPrairie and at Chataqueay near Quebec in 1827.
About a year later they moved to the province of Ontario by way of the St. Lawrence River and landed
near Cornwall just below the Longue Sault Rapids where they made their hom on Hector Ross' Hill.
Three years later they bought a farm on King's Road in Glengarry and named it "Mount Joy"

The John & Mary McPherson on this marker were likely the parents of Walter’s wife
Mary so Duncan would be Mary’s brother.

James joined religion Presbyterian. He was employed as Hardware Merchant.
James moved from Ripley, Ohio to Canyon City, Colorado in 1885 and joined with his sister, Janet's
husband, James Ellis to form Ellis and Hood Hardware. He was a staunch member of the First
Presbyterian Church, contributing generously at the time the church edifice was erected and he
installed the heating and plumbing.

55. John Francis Hood (William, John, John) was born on 27 Dec 1861 in Ripley, Ohio. He died on 16 Jun 1952 in Stockton, California. He was buried in Lodi Cemetery.
John was employed as Machinist.
At one time John Francis operated an iron works at Canyon City (now Canan City), Colorado and in
Oakland, California.
Aided in rebuilding the Southern Pacific after the San Francisco fire of 1906.
He worked as a machinist in his son, Frank's machine shop, Pioneer Garage, in Valley Springs,
California.
The 1900 Census of Oakland, California shows that he and Anna were renting a house at 916 35th
Street. It shows their children, Francis R, Hubert E, Halle C, and Gertrude. It also shows Anna's brother, Harry McKissick living with them at the time.
The 1910 Census of Oakland, California shows that they had purchased a home and that Anna's brother
was no longer living with them.
John was very active with the Stone Corral Church and is listed in church documents as being one of
the charter members who organized the church in 1929. The 1929 roster of members list John Francis
and Catherine Hood as well as his son, Frank and his wife, Anna. One of Robert Dunlap's, John's
grandson's, earliest memories is of sitting in this church listening to his grandfather sing hymns. In a visit
to the church in September 2010 an older member of the Kirk family, a family also involved in the
organization of the church, related to me that Grandpa Hood was his Sunday school teacher when he
was little. When asked if Grandpa Hood was a good Sunday school teacher he said, "Well, I'm still here
so it must have took."
By the 1930 Census, John and Anna are living in Jenny Lind in Calaveras County, California. John is 68
and Anna is 64 and the children are no longer living with them.
John moved to Valley Springs, California in 1945. He lived with his youngest daughter, Halle, in Lodi,
California for several years.
John married Anna Liberty McKissick daughter of Sam R McKissick and Juliet Hanna on 6 Jun 1888 in Canyon City, Colorado. Anna was born on 5 Jul 1864 in Canal, Venango, Pennsylvania, USA. She died on 21 Jun 1943 in Valley Springs, Calaveras, California, USA.

While trying to find information about my family line I came across your blog and research. I have only begun my research into my Hood line. My father was Graeme Arthur Hood, only son of Archibald John Graeme Hood. I believe my grandfather was the son of a John Hood and Christina MacNaughton Hood. My father told me our family originated in Scotland and that we had branches of the family in the United States, I recall him mentioning S. Carolina specifically. Montreal, Quebec, Canada was home for us. This seems to jive well with your blog research. Thank you for posting this.
