Phillips Family History

My paternal grandmother was Margaret May Phillips. This is the information I have been able to gather so far on this branch of the family. I am still in need of more photos and information, especially for the more recent generations.

David is a 48 year old Wagon Maker. No wife is listed but his children are. All of the children are listed as being born in Pennsylvania.

David had the following children:

John and Elizabeth Phillips with their children. John's occupation is listed as farmer. The names and

ages of the family members are as follows:

All children are listed as born in Oregon.

All children are listed as born in Oregon except Walter. He is listed as being born in Washington

Territory.

John married Elizabeth A Sampson  on 10 Nov 1864 in Lafayette, Oregon. Elizabeth was born on 21 Jun 1838 in Illinois. She died in 1900.

Elizabeth's parents were James Sampson and Nancy Kays.

             14 F      viii.  Ida M Phillips  was born on 23 Jul 1870 in New York. She died on 23 Nov

1872 in New Jersey.

             15 M      ix.  Walter S Phillips  was born on 19 Sep 1876 in Washington Territory.

Third Generation

    10. Oscar W Phillips ²  (John, David) was born on 5 Jan 1867 in Oregon. He died on 21 Aug 1936 in Yuba City, California.

Oscar was employed as Dredger in 1920.

The 1910 Census of the Tahoe Forest Reserve lists Oscar as a farmer. Several others on the same

page are listed as gold miners. It gives his father's birthplace as Pennsylvania and his mother's as

Illinois.

The children and their ages are shown as:

Chester 15, William, 12, Margaret, 1.

The 1920 Census of Granite Township, Sacramento County, California lists Oscar and Ida May with

Margaret 11, James 9 and Julius 7. It gives Oscar's age as 56 and occupation as a dredger. His

birthplace is listed as Oregon and he lists his parents birthplaces as United States.

Oscar married Ida May Biggs  daughter of Lewis Tomlinson Biggs and Nancy Jane Lorain. Ida was born on 16 Jul 1873 in Moundsville, West Virginia. She died in Sep 1952 in California. She was buried in Matthew Kilgore Cemetery, Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County, California.

The 1920 census shows Ida May's age as 46 and her birthplace as West Virginia.

She lists her father's birthplace as West Virginia and her mother's as Pennsylvania.

Oscar and Ida had the following children:

             16 M        i.  Chester Phillips  was born on 29 Apr 1894 in California. He died on 6 Oct 1972 in El Dorado, California.

             17 M        ii.  William Phillips  was born on 7 Feb 1898 in California. He died on 27 Feb 1967 in Nevada, California.

+        18 F        iii.  Margaret May Phillips  was born on 26 Oct 1908. She died on 14 Apr 1995.

+        19 M      iv.  James A Phillips  was born on 12 Sep 1910. He died on 13 Sep 2009.

20         M v. Julius W Phillips  was born about 1913 in California. He died on 13 May 1934 in Sacramento, California. He was buried in Matthew Kilgore Cemetery, Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County, California.

Fourth Generation

    18. Margaret May Phillips  (Oscar W, John, David) was born on 26 Oct 1908 in Camptonville, California. She died on 14 Apr 1995 in Santa Cruz, California.

Margaret married (1) Joseph Sequeira . The marriage ended in divorce.

Personal Interview with Nancy Jean Sequeira 10 Sep 2010: Nancy did not know much about her father

except that he lived in the Mateca, California area and that his family was of Portuguese decent from the

Azores. She was not close with her gradparents and did not recall her grandparents names but did

remember that her grandmother did not speak English, only Portuguese.

Nancy married (1) Henry R Rodrigues  on 11 Apr 1976 in Santa Clara, California. The marriage ended in divorce.

Nancy married (2) Ronald D Smitherman ³  on 22 Apr 1967 in Santa Cruz, California. The marriage ended in divorce. They were divorced in Jul 1969.

Margaret married (2) Francis (Frank) Robert Hood  son of John Francis Hood and Anna Liberty McKissick on 13 Jan 1933. The marriage ended in divorce. Francis was born on 28 Dec 1892 in Canon City, Fremont, Colorado. He died on 6 Aug 1953 in San Andreas, California. He was buried in Milton Cemetery.

Francis was employed as Machine shop owner, "Pioneer Garage" in Valley Springs, California. He married on 13 Jan 1933.

Frank married Verna Higgenbotham in 1916 and had a daughter, Lavinia Ruth, in 1918. Frank and Verna later divorced and in 1933 he married Margaret Sequeria. A son, Francis Jr. was born to he and Margaret but

they soon divorced. In 1940 Frank re-married Verna. They were building a home in Calaveras County

when he died suddenly of a heart attack.

Frank was Past Master of the Keystone Masonic Lodge at Milton and Past Patron of Eastern Stars.

Francis and Margaret had the following children:

                              +        22 M        ii.  Rev. Robert Francis Dunlap  was born on 25 Jan 1934.

                               His name on his birth certificate was Francis Robert Hood.  His father was Frank Hood, but his mother remarried when he was quite young and he took the name of his stepfather, Dunlap, though he was not legally adopted.
                               After his marriage to Dolores June Hearne and shortly before the birth of their first child, he had his name legally changed to Robert Francis Dunlap.  He had gone by this name all his life.

                               Bob graduated from Pacific Bible College with a Bachelor's degree in 1955  and then with his Masters in 1956.  He was ordained as a minister in the Evangelical Methodist Church denomination.  He pastored a church in Orangevale, CA and then in San Diego.  He later worked as Director of Church Relations for Azusa Pacific College.

Margaret married (3) Randolph "Jerry" Everet Dunlap ⁴  son of Wirt C Dunlap and Mabel H Rosa. The marriage ended in divorce. Randolph was born on 18 Dec 1912 in Calaveras County, California. He died on 2 Dec 1984 in Amador, California.

Randolph went by Jerry most of the time. He worked in lumber mills in Placerville and West Point,

California.

He was a Republican and was listed as a Laborer in census records.

Randolph and Margaret had the following children:

             23 M       iii.  William "Bill" Randolph Dunlap  was born on 3 Feb 1941 in Sacramento County, California.

William was employed as Road department supervisor in Santa Cruz County, California.

Bill was a drag racer in the 1960's and 70's, racing top fuel dragsters mostly in

California. It was a dangerous sport and he had a few crashes but he always came

back for more. In the 1990's he continued to race his 1970's era dragster in a

nostalgia class of racing.

    19. James A Phillips  (Oscar W, John, David) was born on 12 Sep 1910 in Camptonville, California. He died on 13 Sep 2009 in Folsom, California.

"Born to Oscar Phillips and Ida Biggs Phillips, September 12, 1910 in Camptonville, CA., passed September 13, 2009 in Folsom, CA. Jim was a World War II Air Force veteran, serving at Burtonwood Airbase, England, "The Mighty Eighth", oldest member of The Burtonwood Association, and a life long volunteer in Folsom giving history and mining talks to many Northern California schools and groups. Survived by children, Barbara Guisti, Dale Lawson, Linvel Phillips, Bill Phillips, Jim Lerch, Carl Lerch, and Jerry Markell; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Service to be held on Sept. 21, 2009, 11:30 a.m., First Southern Baptist Church, 1301 Coloma Way, Roseville, CA. 95678 782-6513."

Fifth Generation

    24. Linvel James Phillips  (James A, Oscar W, John, David) was born on 25 Mar 1939. He died on 25 Jul 2010 in Folsom, California.

Linvel served in the military Air Force in Korea.

Obituary published in the Sacramento Bee September 5, 2010.

Linvel James Phillips: Born to James and Hazel Phillips on March 25 1939 and raised in Folsom, CA. A

1957 Folsom High School graduate, Linvel served in Korea for the U.S. Air Force, then returned to his

beloved Folsom to raise his family and live an exciting and full life. He fought a short but vigilant battle

with the effects of chemo due to non-hodgkins lymphoma, and left us to explore the eternal trails on July

25, 2010.

Linvel, his father, brother and their sons, were all leaders in efforts to protect and preserve Folsom's

historic treasures. The Wells Fargo assay office that served miners and Pony Express riders was set for

demolition, and they joined residents who banded together to save the granite facade and

commemorative plaques. They helped raise money to buy a new site and joined crews to restore the

building by dismantling and reassembling the building, now the Folsom History Museum. They helped

establish the Folsom Interpretive Center along with members of the Perazzo and Russell families. The

three Phillips men and their sons built its blacksmithing shop, wagon barn, milling shack and other

exhibits - all from timbers they salvaged from 17 miles of the Natomas Company flumes after dredger

mining came to an end in Folsom. The Phillips family bought and moved the historic Ashland freight

depot to the Folsom Interpretive Center, donated other antique equipment for the display, and built a

16' working waterwheel. He leaves to his friends and family two unfinished legacy projects - the

preservation of the famous Bickford Little Truckee River Ranch just north of Truckee as part of the

public trust, and a Phillips family donation of an 8' working waterwheel to the town of Truckee

constructed by Jim Phillips. The waterwheel is a replica of those used by both the Truckee Lumber Co.

and the Truckee Electric & Light Co. from 1868 - 1929.

Linvel was an avid hunter, firearm enthusiast, fisherman, motorcycle rider, four-wheel enthusiast,

carpenter, master electrician, cook, mechanic, historian, and collector of much. He was a member of the

fun-loving Folsom Banditos in the late 60's and early 70's, the NRA, the Marlin Arms Collectors

Association and provided many years of educational displays and advice to the collecting community of

the country's historic firearms. Important to him was his work on behalf of veterans. He was former

Commander for VFW Post 6604, Folsom, and VFW Post 6158, Fair Oaks, and served to bring to its

members the full array of veteran benefits that they so justly earned. His memory will be kept in the

hearts of his wife, Nina Luther-Phillips; children, Toni Phillips-Steelman (Mark Steelman), David Phillips,

Diane Phillips, Sara Weldy; grandchildren, Michael Steelman, Matthew Steelman and Taylor Thompson;

sister Barbara Guisti and her family; brother Bill Phillips and his family; stepbrother and many cousins,

as well as his former wives, Joyce Herbeck, his childrens' mother, and Jan Thompson. Linvel will be

greatly missed, but fondly remembered by his family, friends and community. A Memorial Service and

Celebration of Life will be held on September 11, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Veterans of Foreign Wars,

Post 6158, 8990 Kruiutof Way, Fair Oaks, CA.
